Read all about it!……….

The last half term has flown by in the blink of an eye. We have learnt about the Olympics, enjoyed brilliant PTA events, shared work with other countries and had a visit from our French friends.

As the academic year draws to an end I would like to thank you all for your tremendous support throughout the year. The children have had a wonderful year and with your help, have received some memorable learning experiences.

Thank you for your continued support and I hope that you have a lovely and sunny summer break.

Best Wishes

Shaun O’Connell                          Headteacher

SuperstarsDuring Weeks 1 and 3 of the school holidays Superstars will be running a multi sports holiday club at the school. There are still spaces available. For more information and to book call Superstars on 0845 2413682 or alternatively turn up and pay on the day.
Paired ReadingDue to the success of the last Paired Reading Scheme the children will be bring home new Paired Reading Records to use in the summer holidays. The scheme is designed for the children to read or be read to every day for 10 minutes or so. This will promote reading and hopefully ensure that your children will want to continue reading daily. This will also help them greatly when they return to school in September. All children who return their reading records in September will be entered into a special prize draw. Thank you for your support!
Our French FriendsWe were honoured to host our friends from Tregomeur, Brittany in early July. Twenty children and 3 adults made the long trip and despite the weather had an amazing time. They met up with children and parents at Roath Park on the Sunday, came to school and visited all the classrooms on the Monday and spent a day touring Cardiff on the Tuesday. The visit was a tremendous success and we are looking to continuing this link for years to come.

Healthy Schools AwardOur school has recently been granted Phase 3 of the Healthy Schools Award. Thank you all for helping us become a much healthier school! The School Council has also recently met with the School Cook to look at ways that lunchtimes can be made more enjoyable for the children.

School WebsiteWe are in the process of re-designing our school website. In the meantime we will continue to update our existing website. You will be able to access up to date news by clicking the PTA icon as this will transfer you to the PTA website which will give both PTA and general school news which will be updated on a regular basis. Thank you for your patience and we hope that by clicking the PTA icon you are able to keep up to speed with both PTA and School News.
INSET DaysAll schools have been allocated 5 INSET days for the next academic year. I can confirm that our INSET days will take place on the following dates:

Monday September 3rd 2012

Monday October 1st 2012

Monday 12th November 2012

Friday 22nd March 2013

Monday 22nd July 2013

We will send reminders out to you closer to the time of these training days.

School Council/Residents AssociationThe school Eco Committee recently joined forces with some of the local residents in taking part in a litter pick around the Hollybush Estate. The team collected 10 bags of rubbish and worked very hard to help the community. The team was led by Chris from Keep Wales Tidy. Well done to them all!

Olympic Week/SportsdaysDespite the poor weather the children have enjoyed learning about the Olympic Games recently. During the Olympic week the children participated in a variety of activities including table tennis, boxing, cycling, tennis and track events. Both the Infant and Junior Sports mornings were brilliant successes with the children and parents having a great time. Thank you so much for your support! The atmosphere at both events was lovely. The children also received a visit from local student Ruby Miller who was selected as an official Olympic Torch bearer. Ruby spoke to all the children about her achievements and every child in the school held the torch. A huge thank you to Ruby for her time and patience as she fielded so many questions during an afternoon!

Helen ElliotWelsh artist Helen Elliot recently visited our school to work with Years 3 and 4. Helen is a Niaive artist and specialises in painting seasides and local communities. The children developed a range of skills during Helen’s visit and have worked together to paint their local community. The painting is on display in the entrance hall and is very much in the style of Helen Elliot. Please pop in to have a look. We hope you enjoy it.

Attendance/Punctuality

Some parents have queried the attendance data which has been sent home with the school reports. I would like to clarify that the school day is split into two sessions. Therefore if a child has missed 5 days of school over the year that would be recorded as 10 sessions.

All parents should have received a letter from the Chief Executive Jon House regarding attendance. In his letter Mr House informed parents that the LEA policy for term time holidays will change from September. Parents are encouraged not to take holidays during term time as these will be classed as unauthorised absences from September. We hope that our attendance figures will improve from September as this can only have a positive effect on the attainment of our children. The school will continue to work closely with the Whitchurch attendance officer in supporting families to improve attendance levels. Should you have any difficulties in getting your child to school please contact us so that advice and support can be given to parents. It is also important that children arrive at school on time. The school will be delivering Read Write Inc lessons from 9.05am from September so regular lateness will have a negative effect on children’s literacy attainment. Regular lateness also has a negative impact on a pupil’s self esteem. Thank you for your support in this matter.

 Free School Meals

If any parent receives Income support and/or Child Tax credits please could you contact the school office to apply for your child to receive free school meals. We would like you to do this even if you do not wish your child to have the free meal because the school receives additional funding based on the percentage of children who have free meals. Should you have any questions regarding this or would like to find out more please contact the school office.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Year 1

We have visited a chef’s school at the Masons Arms. We learnt about foods from around the world and how different types of food are good for our bodies. We have enjoyed our Olympic Sports activities and are looking forward to the real Games beginning. We have also worked with students from the High school as part of our Enchanted topic to make wooden leaves.

Year 2

We have been learning about the Olympics. We had a Greek Day, a silly Olympics week for science work and have found out lots about the Modern Olympic Games. We have danced with Move-A-Book,taken part in an Art project with Whitchurch High School and kept in touch with our friends in Germany (Skype) and London (by letter) and have made new friends in France.
